Unlike his home in Bologna, where the bedroom was also the place where Morandi conceived and created his works, in his house in Grizzana the artist chose to separate his workplace from his place of rest.

Inside Morandi’s small, sparsely furnished bedroom, the bed on which the artist spent most of his summer nights stands out. It is a very modest bed frame supporting an old mattress that appears small in comparison to his imposing stature. In fact, it is said that Morandi slept with his legs bent so as not to fall off the mattress.

At the foot of the bed, in a corner under the window, stands a desk with drawers that still holds a series of personal items left by the artist during his last summer in Grizzana. Along with various brushes, with blunt tips to achieve a particular color application, the artist kept Windsor & Newton oil paints, one of London’s most highly regarded brands in the art world, and a couple of books on Giotto and Masaccio, which testify to his interest in classical forms and principles.

Next to Morandi’s bedroom is the other bedroom, belonging to Anna and Maria Teresa. This room also appears to have remained unchanged over the years. The dressing table still holds the sisters’ hairbrushes and cosmetics, while their clothes and linen are still neatly folded inside the wardrobe.
